The Master Gardener Program
USU Extension Master Gardeners will have the opportunity to volunteer at several projects in Washington County.The purpose of the USU Extension Master Gardener Program is to develop a network of trained volunteers who can provide the Washington County with unbiased, research-based horticultural education and technical assistance in gardening and home horticulture.
Class Description
Master Gardener course participants attend 12 weeks of college-level lecture and hands on training taught by Utah State University Extension Specialists and Extension Faculty. After completion of the in-class training, USU Master Gardeners become an integral part of the educational community while sharing their research-based knowledge through volunteer service (see below).
The USU Extension Master Gardener volunteer training course lectures are held once a week from January through March. There will be some outside learning held on a Saturday.
The course includes, but is not limited to the following topics:
- Soils and Fertilizers
- Fruits and Vegetables
- Trees, Shrubs and Flowers
- Weed Science
- Entomology
- Turfgrass
Class Volunteering
Volunteering is the heart and soul of the program. To receive final Master Gardener Certification, participants must complete 30 hours of approved USU service projects. The following are examples of potential volunteer opportunities:
- Demonstration garden management
- Public education presentations
- Guided garden tours
- County fairs and gardening festivals
